From July 18-21, 2024, Buffalo, New York will be the epicenter for fans and scholars of speculative fiction as the Upstate New York Science Fiction and Fantasy Alliance proudly presents Buffalo NASFiC 2024. This 16th North American Science Fiction Convention will take place at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo and the Buffalo Convention Center, transforming them into a hub for aficionados of science fiction, fantasy, comics, horror, and cosplay from across the continent.
The convention’s Guests of Honor include:
• Alan Dean Foster, renowned sci-fi and fantasy writer of 140 novels, known for film script novelizations. He ghost-wrote the original Star Wars novelization, and has story credit for the movie Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
• Nilah Magruder, the first Black woman to write for Marvel Comics, honored for her web comic M.F.K. with the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics.
• Phil and Kaja Foglio, founders of Studio Foglio, LLC, art contributors to Magic: The Gathering, and creators of the comic series Girl Genius, which received three consecutive Hugo Awards for Best Graphic Story.
• Tony and Suford Lewis, influential figures in science fiction fandom, founders of the MIT Science Fiction Society and the New England Science Fiction Association.
Additionally, Ghanaian author Cheryl Ntumy serves as the Virtual Guest of Honor, contributing to the Afrocentric science fiction universe of The Sauúti Collective.
Other notable program participants include Hugo Award winning author Allen Steele, World Fantasy Award winning artist Tom Kidd, Hugo and Nebula Award nominated author Lawrence Schoen, Magic: The Gathering artist Jeff Menges, Hugo Award winning editor Neil Clarke, Hugo and Nebula Award winning author David Gerrold, Hugo Award nominated editor Mur Lafferty, and Hugo Award winning artist Frank Wu. Virtual participants include Hugo Award winning author C.J. Cherryh and Nebula Award winning author Elizabeth Moon.
The convention promises an in-depth exploration of diverse genres, spotlighting popular franchises like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Tolkien, alongside lesser-known gems. Attendees can enjoy a rich program featuring panels, workshops, a cosplay competition, a dance, a science fiction-themed burlesque, gaming, an art show, and more.
